Why is it important to recycle fluorescent lamps?
Fluorescent lamps contain mercury, a hazardous material. When improperly disposed of in landfills, mercury can leach into groundwater and soil. Illinois law (Illinois Lamp Act) requires businesses to recycle fluorescent lamps through certified recyclers rather than disposing of them in regular trash.
Is it legal to throw fluorescent bulbs in the trash?
For businesses, no. Under Illinois law and EPA regulations, fluorescent lamps are classified as Universal Waste and must be recycled or disposed of as hazardous waste. Residential users in Illinois may discard small quantities in household trash, but proper recycling is always recommended.
How do you handle mercury during recycling?
Our recycling process uses controlled crushing and mercury vapor capture technology. Mercury is captured and processed for reuse in new lamps or industrial applications. Phosphor powder and glass are also recovered. Our processors are fully permitted and regularly audited.
